T1D Care Interest Group
Mission Statement:
The T1D Care Interest Group was created in response to the limited educational opportunities regarding type 1 diabetes (T1D) available for medical students at UACOM-P and the inaccurate overgeneralization of the condition of diabetes as one single disease in the medical community as a whole. According to the CDC, in 2021, 38.4 million people in the United States had diabetes, with 2 million of these patients having T1D, including over 300,000 children and adolescents. As such, it is extremely likely that, as physicians, regardless of specialty, we all will care for patients with T1D at some point in our careers. However, the intricacies of this condition and what it means for patients and caregivers are not adequately addressed in our curriculum. Furthermore, opportunities are limited for adults and youth living with T1D in the Phoenix metro area to connect with others with this condition and participate in education outside of the doctor’s office. Thus, the T1D Care IG aims to 1) educate the UACOM-P student and faculty population about caring for patients with T1D through informational sessions by endocrinologists and other T1D healthcare professionals, 2) connect with and enrich the T1D community in Phoenix through outreach events, and 3) provide a community on caThe T1D Care Interest Group is dedicated to educating medical students about type 1 diabetes (T1D) and how to best provide continuing care for patients with T1D, and providing outreach opportunities to support and educate the Phoenix T1D community.mpus for medical students living with T1D.
